University College of Medical Sciences

The UCMS library system consist of a Central Library and 17 Departmental Libraries, which collectively support the teaching, research and extension programmes of the college. The Central Library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of books, journals, back volume of journals, theses, WHO publications, CD ROMs and internet services. The library strives to provide timely, accurate and current information, and to provide an appropriate and comfortable academic environment for the users.

Library hours (as of January 2009)

The Library is open on

Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM to 12:00 Midnight

Saturday: 9:00 AM to 04:00 PM

The reading room is kept open for 24 hours on all days (except holidays).

Location

The Central Library is located in a separate building adjacent to the main building of the college. The Library operates from first and second floor of Library-cum-Conference Block. The organization is as follows.

First Floor	Librarian’s Office, Technical Section, Property Counter, Check Post, Circulation Counter (Issue & Return), Computer Room for Students & Faculty Members, Current Periodical Section, Reference Book Section, Book Section, Thesis, WHO Publication, Reading Hall.
Senond Floor	Back volumes of journals, Reading Hall for consulting back volumes of journals, Reading Room, Old Text Book section, Book Bank section and Medical Education Unit.

Library Collection

The collection comprises mainly books, journals, theses, CDs, e-Journals (those that are free with print subscription), etc. The books are arranged on shelves according to Dewey Decimal Scheme of classification. The current journals and back volumes of journals are arranged on shelves in an alphabetical order by title. Within each title, the journals are arranged in chronigical order. The total collection of library as on 31st March 2008 is as follows.

The library offers the following facilities and services.

6. The members have privilege of direct access to the shelves in the stack halls and the freedom to browse books during specified hours.

7. Internet facility to students, research scholars and faculty members.

Circulation (Issue/ Return)

The books and journals are issued to bonafied members of the Library. The books are issued for a period of 2 weeks, current journals for 1 week and reference books for overnight. The back volumes of journals, CDs and thesis are for in-house use only.

Future Plans

1. Planning to acquire library management software in near future.
2. The Library has obtained membership to ERMED (Electronic Resources in Medicine) – INDIA e-journal consortium started by National Medical Library.
